Compare container haulage and loose cargo delivery from Tema Port. Plan vehicle access, unloading, return responsibilities and a clearer CargoMov quote.
Start with the actual collection unit
Ask the clearing or warehouse contact one direct question: what will the driver physically collect? It could be an intact container, a group of pallets or individual cartons released from a consolidation warehouse. Describe that unit in your CargoMov request. 'One container of stock' is too vague if the goods will already have been unpacked before collection.
A 20ft box truck is not automatically suitable for carrying a 20ft shipping container. Container haulage needs compatible equipment and an agreed loading and unloading method. State the container size, gross weight and any special handling requirement; let the operator confirm suitability instead of selecting by the vehicle's name alone.
Compare the whole movement, not just the quote
For an intact container, establish where it will be unloaded, how long unloading may take, who will handle it and who arranges the empty return. If the destination cannot accommodate the vehicle or container, resolve that before dispatch. A lower road fare can become expensive when access or return arrangements are missing.
For loose cargo, count every carton or pallet and record dimensions, weight and packaging condition. Include any warehouse handling charges, extra helpers and weather protection in the comparison. Avoid assuming that deconsolidation is included in the driver's offer: it may be a separate warehouse service.
Illustrative decision: a retailer collecting 30 released cartons for a small Accra shop might need a covered truck sized to those cartons, while a factory receiving an intact container needs a different transport and receiving plan. Neither option is automatically cheaper; obtain comparable quotes for the actual job.
Send a quote brief that drivers can use
Include the release-ready pickup point, receiving address, package or container details, date, contact numbers, loading method, unloading method and expected waiting allowance. Add photos without exposing unrelated customs documents or personal information. If the cargo includes goods requiring special permission or handling, disclose that and seek confirmation before booking.
Ask each provider what is excluded: terminal charges, warehouse labour, lifting equipment, empty return, additional stops or waiting. Keep the agreed scope with the booking reference. For a reusable load description, see the cargo measurements guide.
Keep port release and road delivery separate
GPHA's Port Process guidance describes clearance stakeholders and documentation. Confirm the requirements applying to your shipment with the relevant authorised parties; this article is not a substitute for clearance advice. CargoMov's inland booking does not itself release cargo from Tema Port or Takoradi Port.
Once collection is authorised, post your cargo job with the confirmed details and review suitable offers. Businesses moving recurring cargo can use the Business account for their account workflow. Vehicle availability and acceptance depend on the actual load, route and operational review.

Frequently asked questions
Can a normal box truck carry a shipping container?
Do not assume so. An intact container needs compatible transport equipment and an agreed handling plan. A box truck may instead carry goods already unpacked and released for collection.
Does CargoMov handle customs clearance?
This guide concerns inland transport. Confirm customs clearance and terminal or warehouse release with the appropriate authorised parties before dispatch.
What affects Tema Port cargo delivery cost?
The transport unit, weight, route, handling equipment, access, waiting and any empty-container return all affect the scope. Request a written quote rather than relying on a universal rate.
Ready to plan your delivery?
Use CargoMov to plan a cargo booking, review available pricing options and follow the delivery. Agent access and Driver access are subject to the relevant account approval.
