Before transporting valuable goods in Ghana, check the insurer, insured value, exclusions, excess and claims process. Booking is not proof of cover.

Ask what is actually insured

Do not assume a delivery booking or a driver's motor insurance protects the full value of your goods. Ask for the relevant cargo policy details and written confirmation of the cover applicable to your consignment. This article is a general checklist, not advice about which policy to buy.

Ghana's National Insurance Commission explains that policy terms determine the risks covered and claims conditions. Check the provider through the NIC consumer resources and speak with a licensed insurer or intermediary about your particular goods.

Check value, scope and exclusions

Describe the goods accurately and ask how the insured value is determined. Confirm the geographic route, start and end of cover, any excess you must bear, and whether loading, unloading or temporary storage are included. Obtain answers in writing rather than relying on the word 'insured'.

Ask specifically about fragile goods, used equipment, poor packaging, theft, delay and unattended vehicles where relevant. These are questions to investigate, not a statement that every policy includes or excludes them. Keep the policy schedule and applicable conditions together.

Prepare records before dispatch

Retain invoices or other evidence of value, a packing list and dated condition photographs. Ask the insurer what evidence and reporting deadlines apply if something goes wrong. Packaging and safe handling still matter even where cover is confirmed.

When arranging a CargoMov delivery, declare the load accurately and ask support to clarify any insurance option shown in your booking. Do not treat a displayed charge or a submitted request alone as confirmation of cover. Report an incident promptly to the relevant parties and follow the insurer's instructions; compensation is not automatic.
